What is the Best Age for Braces?

Best Age for Braces
The time is coming…your sweet little angel has that big toothy grin that we all love, yet you know what is next. Braces. Is it time? What is the best age for braces?

As you can imagine, as every child’s teeth are different, there is really no best age for orthodontic treatment. However, there are some guidelines on when to find an orthodontist and think through an orthodontic plan. Fortunately, your pediatric dentist is a great guide for when to and how to find the right orthodontist to work with!

When Should I Make My Child’s First Appointment?

Many orthodontists—including us at Goldberg Orthodontics—agree with the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that it is a good idea to make an initial orthodontic appointment when your child is around 7 years of age (unless there is a problem beforehand). This does not mean treatment will be necessary at this point. It’s simply a visit to get an idea of what is going on and lay groundwork for the next few years.

In most routine cases, braces aren’t recommended until your child is between 10 and 14 years old. Ideally, we want to consider braces after your child loses all of his primary teeth and his 12-year molars are all at least partially erupted. It is difficult to make a change to teeth if they haven’t even erupted into the mouth yet! Starting too early may cause treatment plans to drag on longer than expected. That is simply more time, more cost, and more trouble for you!

However, there are some cases where we may recommend a two-part treatment if we feel correcting a certain issue is best before starting braces. This would include things such as excessive crowding, crossbites, or something that may cause permanent damage.

Ask Questions!

Regardless of what your orthodontist recommends, always ask questions so that you feel comfortable moving forward with any plan. Also, it never hurts to get a second opinion. You definitely want to find the right solution for your child, and the one that feels financially fair as well. We are always ready to have an open discussion with you at any time.
